Jose Mourinho hailed the strength of his squad as one of the key reasons behind Manchester United’s memorable win at Juventus, and claims that such riches weren’t available to him in the home game against the Italian giants.
United lost 1-0 to Juve at Old Trafford last month , when Mourinho surprised fans by opting not to make any substitutions during the match.
United’s bench that night featured goalkeeper Sergio Romero, defenders Eric Bailly and Matteo Darmian, midfielders Andreas Pereira, Fred and Ander Herrera and young attacker Tahith Chong.
But the United manager turned the away game in Turin from the bench .
With United 1-0 down, Juan Mata came on in the 79th minute and scored a free-kick six minutes later.
Fellow sub Marouane Fellaini then caused havoc in the Juve box which led to Leonardo Bonucci’s own goal winner, and Marcus Rashford was denied a goal by a late save from Wojciech Szczesny.
Bailly, Darmian, Fred and Romero were the unused subs.
“I said in the home game against Juventus that I didn’t make any change because there we no [experienced] attacking players on the bench,”Mourinho told MUTV .
“It was really difficult with no Alexis [Sanchez], no Fellaini.
"Everybody was playing and I had no changes to do. A rich bench normally means points and, against Juventus , we had the bench that could help us change the game."
Mourinho added that Romelu Lukaku could return to his squad for the Manchester derby trip to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday , having missed the last two fixtures.
“No new injuries,” he said.
“So from Juventus, we don’t bring important injuries. We have ‘touches’ but I don’t think any player that was available for Juventus will be out.
”We have a chance – it is Friday morning now – that Lukaku could be back.“
