How Kate Middleton Honored Princess Diana at the BAFTAs

Kate Middleton found the smallest way to honor her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, and fans noticed immediately. Kate Middleton and Prince William were on hand for the weekend’s BAFTA Awards and the Duchess of Cambridge was simply stunning.

While many fans admired Middleton’s classic one-shouldered
flowing white dress and simple up-do, it was one small detail that won people
over. With her hair pulled up, Middleton’s earrings were on full display.

The elegant diamond and pearl drop earrings are significant
because they belonged to Princess Diana. The late Princess of Wales wore the earrings
on several occasions, including a 1990 event for the new Emperor of Japan

Middleton inherited some of Princess Diana’s jewelry

According to reports, Princess Diana’s sons inherited her jewelry collection, including the gorgeous sapphire engagement ring that Prince William gave to Middleton when he proposed.

The Duchess of Cambridge received a posy after a visit to @family_action today. The Duchess was in Lewisham, South London to launch a new support line called FamilyLine which uses a network of volunteers from across the country to support parents & carers through phone calls, email and texts. The Duchess’ visit to @family_action furthers her work in supporting children from their earliest years – HRH is currently driving a research project to establish what more can be done in across the UK to give children their best possible start in life.

Both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, will likely wear more of their late mother-in-law’s jewelry at events, with Markle spotted wearing Diana’s aquamarine ring to her wedding reception. Markle’s engagement ring also contains two stones from Diana’s collection.

In Princess Diana’s will, Diana’s Letter of Wishes stated: “But I would like you to allocate all my jewelry to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it. I leave the exact division of the jewelry to your discretion.”

When Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement was
announced, the Duke of Cambridge noted: “It’s my mother’s engagement ring, and
it’s very special to me, as Kate is very special to me now as well. It was only
right the two were put together. It was my way of making sure mother didn’t
miss out on today and the excitement.”

Middleton has worn other pieces from Diana’s collection, including the diamond and pearl Lover’s Knot Tiara, a pair of sapphire earrings, and a pearl bracelet.

Middleton gives Princess Diana vibes

In addition to sporting the gorgeous drop earrings that
belonged to Princess Diana, fans found another parallel in the style of gown
she wore to the BAFTAs.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a white gown by Alexander McQueen (who also designed her wedding dress), a style very similar to a dress Princess Diana wore in 1991. Diana wore a one-shouldered white chiffon gown by designer Gina Fratini to a charity gala in Sol de Janeiro, Brazil.

Why were Prince William and Kate Middleton at the BAFTAs?

The couple weren’t just making a red carpet appearance at the event, but were at the BAFTA awards for a specific reason. Prince William has been the president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts since 2010 and presented the BAFTA Fellowship award to film editor Thelma Schoonmaker.

Prince William told the audience: “Catherine and I are
delighted again to join you this evening as we part with another amazing year
in film. BAFTA is known for achieving excellence and championing creativity, but
at its heart it is an organization that inspires and nurtures exceptional

He continued: “I am a passionate supporter of BAFTA and I couldn’t be more proud of its ambitious plans to dramatically increase the support for new talent over the coming years.”
