Joe Biden praised Attorney General William Barr 24 years ago, calling him “one of the best” attorneys general he’d ever worked with in his long congressional career.
Biden complimented Barr in 1995 when he was the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, CBS News reported.
Barr, President George H.W. Bush’s AG in the early 1990s, was working in private practice at the time, and had appeared before the committee to testify at a hearing on incarcerating criminals.
“As I know you know, but others should know, too, I truly enjoyed working with you when you were attorney general,” Biden told Barr.
“You were one of the best I have ever worked with, and there have been a lot of attorneys general since I have been here, and I mean that sincerely.”
Since Barr became President Trump’s attorney general and emerged as a frequent target of Democrats’ attacks, Biden has changed his tune.
“I think he’s lost the confidence of the American people,” Biden said last month, saying that Barr was acting more like Trump’s defense lawyer than as the country’s top law enforcement officer, a charge Barr denied.
