During a segment yesterday on Liverpool-born boxer Tony Bellew ahead of his upcoming fight against Oleksandr Usyk, the digital channel used a graphic of the UK with the English flag of St George covering both England and Wales.
The error by the 24-hour sports channel did not go down well.
Leanne Wood, for the former leader of Plaid Cymru, was one of many who took to social media to vent their anger.
She wrote on Twitter: “Dear @SkySports @SkyUK, You have made an error here by placing an England flag over Wales.
"Does someone need some basic geography lessons, perhaps?
"I look forward to you rectifying this mistake & I hope you won’t be using this graphic again. Diolch."
Czarny Kapturek said: “This is a massive cymrophobic insult. However put this up should be reprimanded, and you should apologise. (I note that Ynys Môn escaped this insult, however).”
Kerry Rhys was also suitably outraged: “@SkyNews this is a vile and disgusting violation and denial of the Welsh Nation. Will you be reporting your sister channel on the main headlines today? I'm sure if someone put the English flag over any other country, you would report it.”
Sky Sports News later tweeted an apology, writing: “Thanks to everyone for pointing out the error we made with our Usyk v Bellew graphic last night. We’ve now corrected this and would like to apologise for any offence caused.”
