How many people died during the 9/11 terror attacks – and what year it happened

Today marks the anniversary of the harrowing 9/11 attacks, which have re-shaped the world as we know it.

Anyone old enough at the time will remember where they were and when they saw the Twin Towers in New York fall.

Today, various events around the world will mark the moment when thousands of people lost their lives.

The 9/11 terror attacks were a series of co-ordinated attacks on New York, Washington PC and Pennsylvania by 19 terrorists who hijacked four US commercial planes.

It was dubbed by The New York Times as the “worst and most audacious terror attack in American history”.

What year did 9/11 happen?

The terror attack unfolded on September 11 , 2001 – which is now 18 years ago.

On the day which seemingly started as any other, 19 terrorists hijacked four US commercial planes headed westwards.

Two planes – American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 75 – crashed into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York.

A third was flown into the Pentagon in Washington DC, and a fourth crashed into a field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

It is believed the fourth plane crashed after a struggle between the hijackers and the passengers.

How many people died in the 9/1 terror attack?

As a result of the terror attack 2,996 people died – including the 19 hijackers.

A total of 2,977 people were killed in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania.

This was 2,753 in New York, 184 in Washington, and 40 in Pennsylvania.

This included 343 firefighters and paramedics, and 60 police officers who rushed to the scene to help.

It was the worst loss of life due to a terrorist incident on US soil.

Those killed included 67 British people.

In 2017 another victim of the World Trade Center attack was identified.

He became the 1,641st person to be identified out of those who died in New York.

Many died after throwing themselves out of the building after realising they wouldn’t make it out alive.

One of them was the iconic “Falling Man”, whose famous image has remained as a harrowing reminder of what happened.

The man, who fell from the North Tower at 9.41am, was never identified.

But he is believed to have worked at the Windows of the World restaurant.

In 2011 American officials revealed 18,000 people were still suffering from illnesses linked to the dust.
