The disturbing clip shows one man holding a 10-month old puppy while a second fills his hand with beer for it to drink.
Onlookers can be heard cheering as the members of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity force the pooch’s head into the alcoholic drink.
The stunt is commonly referred to as a “keg stand”, but usually involves students looking to show off rather than innocent animals.
Hofstra University, in New York, US, condemned the actions and said it took place off-campus.
Spokeswoman Karla Schuster said: “The behaviour seen on the video is unacceptable and in violation of the University’s Code of Community Standards.
“The University has been in communication with Alpha Epsilon Pi International headquarters, as well as with chapter members regarding this off-campus incident.
“In accordance with University policy, the chapter has been placed on interim suspension pending an investigation.”
Another student shared the video to highlight the horrific abuse towards the puppy.
“So apparently it’s okay to force dogs to drink beer even though it can kill them?” Kristina Proscia wrote.
“I simply shared this to protect the dog and to show I do not support this.”
It comes after TV star Martin Clunes was ditched as a patron for an animal charity after being filmed riding a captive elephant on an ITV show.
