Walthamstow fire – 100 firefighters tackling huge blaze at The Mall shopping centre in east London

AROUND 100 firefighters are tackling a blaze at a shopping centre in Walthamstow, in North East London.

The fire is happening at The Mall with dramatic photos showing smoke billowing from the building.

The London Fire Brigade said 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters are on the scene.

A spokesman for LFB said: "We were called at 7.40am. Fire crews from Walthamstow, Leyton, Tottenham, Leytonstone, Homerton and surrounding fire stations are at the scene."

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

The Metropolitan Police described it as a "major incident" and told residents to avoid the area.

A witness said: "It's absolutely terrible to see. All the roof of the Mall is on fire, it's going to get bigger and bigger."

Stella Creasy, Labour MP for Walthamstow, tweeted: "It appears there is a serious fire incident at the Mall this morning – please keep back from area and let's help the fire brigade do their job."
