So the wait is over for Arsenal fans.
After every man and his dog was linked with the top job at the club, Unai Emery has been named as the Gunners’ new manager, and it seems supporters of the north London club are delighted for the most part.
Sure, the idea of having Mikel Arteta – who was a great servant to Arsenal during his playing days – is a romantic notion. But romance doesn’t win football games, and Gunners fans want to see their club make immediate progress post-Wenger.
Emery looks set to do exactly this, and the Spaniard has already got the backing from the board, with chief executive Ivan Gazidis saying: Unai has an outstanding track record of success throughout his career, has developed some of the best young talent in Europe and plays an exciting, progressive style of football that fits Arsenal perfectly.
"His hard-working and passionate approach and his sense of values on and off the pitch make him the ideal person to take us forward."
And majority owner Stan Kroenke adding: "We’re delighted to welcome Unai to Arsenal. He’s a proven winner.
"We’re confident that he is the right person for the job and that he will work to deliver the triumphs our fans, staff and everyone who cares about Arsenal want."
But some Gunners fans have joked that there is more than meets the eye at play here.
As has previously been pointed out many times before, Wenger’s first name Arsene resembles Arsenal. And while Emery’s first name doesn’t, his surname resembles the Gunners’ stadium; The Emirates, making him the perfect fit for the club… apparently.
Don’t take our word for it though, have a look for yourself at what the fans are saying.
