British rapper Kenny Vulcan died after ‘throwing himself into the sea’
A British rapper who was missing in Rio de Janeiro is believed to have committed suicide by “throwing himself into the sea”, police said today.
Kenny Paul Mukendi, 20, known as Kenny Vulcan, who had appeared in music videos with by artists including Nikki Minaj and James Blunt, and had moved to Brazil to pursue a career in music and acting.
But the Londoner disappeared on April 13 following an all-night recording session with a Brazilian music collection in a studio.
All the albino musician’s social media accounts were deleted with an hour of him taking leaving the studio at around 1pm.
Investigators today released footage of the last time Kenny was seen, taking an Uber on the street outside the studio in Barra da Tijuca, a beachside district in west Rio.
Although he had told his Brazilian girlfriend Renata Lima he was heading home, he in fact headed to a beauty spot where he is believed to have jumped into the sea.
Ms Lima, alerted police and launched a campaign to find him after being unable to contact him for several hours.
Lead investigator Elen Souto said police ruled out suspicions of a violent crime after his backpack – containing his phone, passport and laptop computer – was later found by surfers.
She also revealed that the Brit had a history of depression, according to information from his family.
She said: “Everything that has been constructed in the investigation, his emotional history, the deletion of his social networks, leads us to believe that he voluntarily threw himself into he sea.”
According to police, Kenny took an Uber from the recording studios to the Mirante do Roncador, a rock jutting out into the sea and Rio’s remotest beach on the far edge of the Recreio dos Bandeirantes district.
