Why fans believe Ronaldo is to blame for Messi missing penalty

Lionel Messi missed a penalty in Argentina’s draw with Iceland, as the South American nation kick-started their World Cup campaign on Saturday.

The Barcelona forward is widely regarded the greatest player on the planet, and has won the Ballon d’Or a whopping five times during his career.

Things haven’t always gone to plan for Messi on the international stage however, despite him single-handedly helping his side qualify for this summer’s tournament.

Messi looked busy in Argentina’s clash with Iceland, but was unable to put his stamp on the contest as the minnows showed no fear against their giant opponents.

He was handed a chance to shine in the second half – after an Iceland equaliser cancelled out Sergio Aguero’s opener – when Argentina were awarded a spot-kick.

Messi is known for taking penalties like free-kicks and was expected to bury his shot past Hannes Halldorsson in the Iceland goal.

But the Barcelona legend didn’t appear confident as he ran up to the ball, and saw his effort saved by the shot-stopper.

Football fans immediately took to Twitter to comment on the miss, which comes just one day after Cristiano Ronaldo set the world alight.

The Real Madrid forward – widely regarded as Messi’s rival – netted a hat-trick in Portugal’s 3-3 draw with Spain.

And many believe Ronaldo’s virtuoso performance has got under Messi’s skin.
