Steven Gerrard has already put together a list of potential Rangers signings with former Liverpool team-mate Martin Skrtel one of his top targets.
The Liverpool legend is set to be confirmed as the new Ibrox boss on Friday, with Gary McAllister coming in as his assistant.
It is understood Gerrard has been convinced that sufficient funds will be made available in order to give him and right hand man McAllister a fighting chance in a head-to-head with former Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers.
Veteran Slovakian defender Skrtel, who spent eight years on Merseyside, is on Gerrard’s wishlist, according to the Daily Record.
The 33-year-old has made 199 appearances for Fenerbahce this season, scoring three goals.
Gerrard has been seeking assurances on the size and scale of his transfer budget and it’s believed his decision has been based upon the promise of fresh investment.
Rangers chairman Dave King has offered guarantees of the sums available to mount a credible challenge to Celtic – and Gerrard has intimated he’s up for the challenge.
The former England skipper is under no pressure to quit his position as academy coach at Liverpool before the end of the season but is excited at the prospect of taking his first steps in management with Rangers.
He could even travel to Ibrox with McAllister to take in Saturday’s top six clash with Kilmarnock.
