Michael Ball is returning to screens tonight with another edition of his documentary series called Michael Ball’s Wonderful Wales. However, some viewers will be keen to know a bit more about the musical theatre star’s life beyond the screen as well.
Since 1991, Michael, 59, has been in a relationship with Irish presenter Cathy McGowan, 78.
The couple met after he had just landed the lead role in Aspects of Love.
Cathy came to interview him about his part and sparks flew as they exchanged numbers.
Their friendship later evolved into a romance and the couple has been together ever since.
Michael has previously opened up about how important their relationship has been to him.
In an unearthed interview, the Les Misérables star said she saved his life.
Speaking to the Daily Mail in 2013, he explained how when they first met, she helped him out of a “dark place”.
Michael said: “I was in a bad place when we first met.
“I was depressed, destructive and unfocused, and she made my life better.’
“I can’t properly explain it, but I don’t mind admitting I suffered a breakdown.
“Then Cath came along, and life became worth living.”
Cathy also saved his life another time when a fire engulfed their home while Michael was asleep.
Waking up in the morning, she searched the house until she found him and dragged him to safety.
Michael continued: “It was a really scary thing.
“It destroyed all my memorabilia – gold records, videos and CDs – and it didn’t matter because everyone was all right.”
Elsewhere, Michael has previously opened up on their 20-year age gap.
Speaking to Platinum Magazine, he hit back at the suggestion he could be called a “toyboy”.
He explained: “I’m too old to be a toyboy, and age has by no means been a problem or thought of.
“We’ve been together about 30 years now, and all I can say is I wish I looked as young as she does because she looks amazing!”
Michael Ball’s Wonderful Wales airs tonight at 9pm on Channel 5.
