Strictly Come Dancing sent fans into meltdown on Sunday’s results show opener as it featured a predominately same-sex couple dance routine for the first time in the show’s history.

The powerful routine saw the professional dancers dressed in matching black suits with a red stripe on the leg as they performed to Imagine Dragons.

During the routine, it saw Gorka Márquez and AJ Pritchard on top of a large podium as they danced together.

Viewers were sent wild over the same-sex opener as it gave fans a taste of what the show could be like in upcoming series, after several contestants, judges and LGBT campaigners have backed the idea for years.

Taking to Twitter show watchers praised the hit BBC One programme for its inclusivity as they begged the show to make it a permanent feature and rolled out across the contestants too.

The spectacular opener comes after it was reported ahead of the series that Strictly would have their professional dancers team up in same-sex couples for some of the routines. 

According to The Sun, Strictly producers are keen to pave the way for same-sex dance routines – as advocated for by Dr Ranj Singh – after judges and contestants alike backed the idea. 

It comes after contestant Dr Ranj, 39, revealed he would ‘love’ to dance with another man on the show, despite BBC bosses revealing at the time that they have ‘no plans’ to change its format for this year’s edition.

In an interview with The Mirror, the This Morning host branded the proposal ‘incredibly important’ ahead of his debut on the beloved show.

Talking to the publication, the medic said: ‘I would value a time when same sex couples could dance on shows like Strictly. It is incredibly important.’

‘We are making progress but I think there is still some way to go. It does take time, though we are heading in the right direction’, he added.

Dr Ranj’s comments come after professional dancer Kevin Clifton admitted he would have ‘no problem’ being paired with another man on the show.

Taking questions from fans on Twitter, the 35-year-old was asked: ‘As a gay man who loves the show (and thinks you are brilliant), I’m curious where do you stand on same sex dance partners? Would you be open to dancing with a guy if the show put that to you?’

The Waltham native shared his thoughts on the idea: ‘Just to be clear I’m not involved in any of these decisions. But if that’s what they wanted then I’d have no problem with it.’

Craig Revel Horwood and Robert Rinder were in agreement of Kevin’s comments, as the judge, 53, said he was ‘hopeful’ same-sex couples would soon appear on the show, while the former contestant, 40, admitted ‘it would be great’.
