When will The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 be released?

The first season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel debuted on Amazon on Nov. 29, 2017, as noted in an article in The New York Times. That was after the pilot episode, which aired in March of that year, impressed Amazon so much that they planned to make two eight-episode seasons out of the gate. That turned out to be a wise move, as when it came time to awards season in 2018, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel cleaned house at the Emmy Awards, the SAG Awards, and more.

Season 2 debuted on Dec. 5, 2018, to equal critical acclaim and fan fervor, and once again was a strong contender for a wide variety of awards, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times. As for when Season 3 will drop? According to an article in TV Line, the much-anticipated The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 will be available for streaming on Dec. 6, 2019. We can’t wait!

The main cast will return for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3

Part of what makes The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel so, well, marvelous, is the seriously talented main cast of characters. Of course, the most notable is Rachel Brosnahan, who does such an incredible job as Miriam “Midge” Maisel that she’s brought home multiple trophies for the role in both 2018 and 2019. At her side is Alex Borstein, who plays her fast-talking, gender-bending manager Susie Myerson, who will continue to accompany Midge in her comedy career in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3, according to the season’s trailer.

In addition to the two leading ladies is Michael Zegen, who plays Joel Maisel, Midge’s once-philandering but now regretful husband. Love him or hate him, he was the person Midge went to at the very end of Season 2 for comfort, and he’ll be back in Season 3 as well.

As for the rest of the main cast, which includes Monk‘s Tony Shalhoub as Abraham “Abe” Weissman, Marin Hinkle as Rose Weissman, and Kevin Pollak as Moishe Maisel, they’ll also be returning for Season 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Supporting cast members will be back in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3

Just as the main cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is amazingly talented, so too is the show’s supporting cast. And based on the trailer, many of them will be returning for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3.

For one, Caroline Aaron will reprise the role of Shirley Maisel, Joel’s mother, hopefully with a little more character development. Plus Glee‘s Jane Lynch, who plays the formidable stand-up comedienne Sophie Lennon, will also appear in Season 3, surely adding tension and zest to the plot. You can also expect Will Brill to bring Noah Weissman to life once again, and you’ll again see as his pregnant wife Astrid, played beautifully by Justine Lupe. We’re also likely to see Luke Kirby once again kill it as the famous comedian Lenny Bruce.

Other likely reprisals will be Bailey De Young as Imogene Cleary, Joel Johnstone as Archie Cleary, and Leroy McClain as Shy Baldwin. As for the rest, we’ll just have to wait and see!

There will be some new faces in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3

In addition to the returning main and supporting cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, there will be some new characters who we will meet in Season 3. Some of the casting choices are pretty exciting, too!

Hardcore fans of the show will be the most pumped to see Sterling K. Brown from This is Us appear in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, something that Rachel Brosnahan lobbied for on the red carpet at the 25th annual SAG Awards. “I would give anything to have this one on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Brosnahan gushed to Entertainment Tonight while standing beside Brown. Luckily for everyone, Brown can briefly be seen in an airplane scene in the Season 3 trailer, wishing Midge and Susie a happy flight.

Brown isn’t the only new addition to the cast, as Cary Elwes and Stephanie Hsu will also make appearances in The Marvelous Mrs. MaiseSeason 3, according to an article in Variety. It’s going to be a great season!

What will The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 be about?

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 will differ from the first and second seasons of the show for a variety of reasons. According to creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, the brain behind Gilmore Girls, the big reason is the shift in Midge’s comedy career. “Her journey this year that we’ve set out for her is it’s the first time she’s setting out as a road comic, it’s the first time she’s getting paid for this, it’s the first time she’s going to have consistency, and she’s dealing with audiences that aren’t her people,” she explained in an interview with Variety. “That is going to bring its own story twist to it, we’re definitely going to some different places in Season 3.” It’s going to be interesting to see how Midge develops in this new world!

Additionally, there will be some new locations in Season 3, such as at a USO date overseas, poolside (presumably in Miami), and at the slots in Vegas, which are all shown briefly in the trailer. Clearly the world in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is about to get a lot bigger.

What was in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 trailer?

The trailer for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 is one jam-packed minute and 12 seconds, with lots of fast editing and punchy soundbites. It opens with Midge and Joel in a courtroom, imploring a judge to let Midge go on tour with Shy Baldwin. After that, we see brief shots of Midge on the road, hordes of fans wanting autographs, and Midge and her entourage in a variety of different locales. Interspersed with those scenes is Midge telling jokes on stage, along with quick clips of our favorite characters ready to send Midge and Susie off on tour.

In addition to the fun, we get a taste of what Susie will have to deal with as Midge’s manager in a man’s world, as well as an impressive dance number and several shots of diverse crowds. The trailer wraps up with Susie screaming, “Remember the face!” at an unknown person as she and Midge sit poolside. It’s going to be one wild ride!

The Weissmans will become grandparents again in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3

One of the big things that was revealed in Season 2 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisedidn’t have to do with Midge, but rather another character, as noted by actor Tony Shalhoub. “Astrid has announced that she’s pregnant so that means that we’re going to become grandparents again,” he revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “That will be an interesting thing because of her… wackiness.” He’s likely referring to Astrid’s zealous Judaism — something she’s more committed to than most of the people around her, which is often used on the show for comedic effect.

It’s not lost on actress Marin Hinkle, who plays Rose, that Abe and her character aren’t exactly the best grandparents, either, which further complicates daughter-in-law Astrid’s pregnancy. “And you can see how well we handle our own grandchildren already,” she added. “We hardly seem to know what to do with them. Put them in front of TV sets!” Indeed there’s not a lot of parenting going on in The Marvelous Mrs. Maiseat all, which may or may not change once Astrid becomes a mother in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3.

Abe might be more supportive of Midge in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3

When Abe first discovered that daughter Midge was doing stand-up comedy during their vacation to the Catskills in The Marvelous Mrs. MaiseSeason 2, he was less than thrilled. That makes sense for his character, as he’s a relatively traditional person, and seeing his daughter deliver off-color jokes to a room full of people would, of course, make him a bit uncomfortable.

But Abe also can see that Midge is good at being a comedian, something that the actor who plays Abe, Tony Shalhoub, suspects may develop further in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3. “I think that maybe he’s starting to realize that this isn’t just a pipe dream and that maybe, in the eyes of the public, she’s got something,” he shared in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I’m not sure, but I think there’s a little bit of a thaw going on.” It certainly would be a logical development, as it’s clear that Midge has real comedic talent.

What will happen in Abe's professional life in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3?

Toward the end of The Marvelous Mrs. MaiseSeason 2, it was evident that Abe was having a bit of an existential crisis. Although he’s a tenured professor at Columbia University and gainfully employed at Bell Labs, he’d become dissatisfied with his work, ready to give it all up to pursue social activism again. Naturally, Rose was less than thrilled about this, as Abe is the sole earner in their marriage, and they’re quite well-to-do.

This is likely to play out more in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3, something that excites Marin Hinkle, who plays Rose to Tony Shalhoub’s Abe, because of the drama it will stir up. “It’s exciting that Tony’s character is going to have a huge shake up in his personal and professional life, so that’s going to affect my life because my character needs clothes and needs a nice house,” she explained in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “So we need to figure that out.” Will he stay or will he go? In Season 3, we’ll finally find out.

Will Rose's character develop in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3?

In addition to Abe’s evolving character development, it’s likely that we’ll see Rose grow and change in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 as wellAfter all, her daughter has gone through a divorce and has become a comedian, her son is secretly working for the CIA, her daughter-in-law is pregnant, and her husband is having a personal crisis. That’s a lot for one person to handle.

But Marin Hinkle, who plays Rose, has some specific ideas about what she wants to see happen to her character in Season 3. “My hope would be that you stick Rose next to Alex’s character, Susie, and maybe we get to go to the fortune teller and have Katrina Lenk back because she’s magical. So I think that would be wonderful,” she shared in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “Rose… knows that her daughter does stand up, but she’s never seen her do it. So that would be a delight.” That would be such a fun development!

The inspiration behind The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and its influence on Season 3

If you were wondering what the source material for The Marvelous Mrs. Maiseis, you should know it’s not a graphic novel or an old movie. Rather, as creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has told it, the show was inspired by her own childhood. “Weirdly, my dad was a stand-up comic,” she recalled in an interview with Vanity Fair.  She noted, “And I knew Lenny Bruce’s mother when I was a kid, because she was sort of the godmother to all the comics.”

Sherman-Palladino wasn’t just an observer, either, as she was immersed in the world of comedy herself. “I worked at the Comedy Store,” she continued. “So the show was not so much a conscious homage to any particular comic as it was something that was in my zeitgeist.” We’re sure to see more of her influences pop up in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 — perhaps even a trip to her native Los Angeles.

The influences behind The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's Midge

Midge Maisel is a fictional character who isn’t based on one specific person, but creator Amy Sherman-Palladino definitely looked to real comedians when she was developing the character and her unique brand of comedy. “I’m a massive Joan Rivers fan,” she revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair, noting“And she had that wonderful mix, that battle of wanting to be accepted on a feminine level — [but] you can’t have that many balls and be accepted on a feminine level. It just doesn’t work that way.”

Additionally, Phyllis Diller served as an inspiration for Midge’s character, as did actress Rachel Brosnahan’s grandmother June. “She was very similar to Midge in that she genuinely enjoyed the performative elements of being a woman in the 1950s,” Brosnahan, who plays Midge, explained in another interview with Vanity Fair. “It made her feel good, genuinely. It didn’t feel like a burden, like it may to some modern audiences watching her go through that performance.” It will be interesting to see how Midge develops as a character in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 and if these influences are still front and center.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 just wouldn't work on network TV

The Marvelous Mrs. Maiseis a hit show, winning multiple awards, earning a host of award nominations, and garnering plenty of critical acclaim. Arguably, part of that is because it streams on Amazon, so it doesn’t face restrictions you find on standard TV — where creator Amy Sherman-Palladino can’t see the show thriving. “I don’t think the networks would buy it,” she stated in an interview with Vanity Fair. “I think the networks are still looking for a very specific kind of woman, and when you want to do a woman character like this, you gotta go outside the box.” And Midge Maisel is definitely out of the box.

It’s not like The Marvelous Mrs. Maiseis especially raunchy, but it does push the envelope quite a bit. “Even a tamer world of comedy wouldn’t work on a network,” she continued. “Even if you didn’t have her show her boobs, you shot her from the back or whatever, you didn’t say f**k — it’s not a world that is meant for a network.” Good thing The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 will continue the show’s run on Amazon Prime.

It likely took a lot of work to create the world of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisereally gets the flavor of the 1950s right. But while it might look effortless, it takes a lot of work, from building sets to doing hair and makeup to casting the right people. Additionally, the show has relied heavily on the actors that appear in the background in order to set the stage. “One of my favorite parts about this show is the volume of background actors that we have used,” Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Midge, revealed to Vanity Fair. “They flesh out this world so completely.”

The costuming is also a huge factor, something Brosnahan had to adjust to. “The first maybe two or three episodes, all I could think about was how I couldn’t breathe and how uncomfortable I was,” she continued. “But the costumes are part of what makes Midge come to life, so I was trying to figure out how long it was going to take for me to get used to this. And honestly, the craziest part is that you do.” We’re sure to see more of that in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3.
