A GARDENING fan has shared a super easy tip for those that struggle to grow tomatoes. 

If your tomatoes are constantly splitting or getting eaten by pests here’s how you save them. 


Katie Burdett shared her tip in a TikTok video online. 

She said: “I have a little tomato harvesting secret for you.”

Katie revealed if you’re struggling with your tomatoes you can actually pick your tomatoes a little early. 

The gardening fan said: “You can pick your tomatoes when they’re just starting to blush.”

The gardening fan explained once tomatoes start to turn colour they won’t get bigger.

She said: “They’re just more susceptible to insect damage, sun scald splitting, chipmunk, squirrels and birds.”

“You can bring your blushing tomatoes inside and set them on a place, stem down all next to each other at room temperature.”

Providing you have more than one, a group of tomatoes will ripen each other inside your home.

Katie said: “Tomatoes give off ethylene gas so they’ll ripen each other as they sit here.”

The gardening fan explained her tomatoes will taste just as good ripening inside.

The gardening fan explained this is why you will find supermarket tomatoes lack flavour. 

She said: “Those varieties are bred for shipping and size consistency, not flavour, so the harvesting technique is only a part of the equation when it comes to taste. Go forth and get those beautiful tomatoes you worked so hard to grow!”

The gardening fan’s video racked up over 200,000 views online.
