Danni Bruce, 20, claims friends teased she was a dead ringer the ugly cartoon character and his green princess Fiona when the St Moriz Darker Than Dark left her skin jet black with a hint of green.
Just five minutes after applying one coat of the fake tan Danni was unrecognisable, with hilarious photographs of her developing skin tone quickly going viral online.
The carer and qualified fake tan applier says she is so mortified that she is refusing to leave her house after using the £3.99 product.
Danni, from Nottingham, said: “I was having a meltdown. I looked in the mirror and my whole chest was green.
"I was hiding from everybody in the house. I had my hood up and the sleeves of my dressing gown down to my hands.
“I’d already shared it online so when I showed photos of my green hands I had people calling me the Hulk and Shrek.
“People were photoshopping my face onto Fiona from Shrek's body.
“It was really funny actually – I took it in my stride. If I don’t laugh about it then I will cry.
"However I'm not leaving the house looking like this.”
She had opted for the ‘Darker than Dark’ shade after she felt other attempts with lighter St Moriz products did not leave her with a dark enough tan.
When one application of the product turned her skin a strange colour, Danni realised she could not wash it off because there was someone using the bathroom.
While the mousse washed off to leave her with colour closer to her skin tone, she still claims she looks 'very dirty' thanks to a green tinge.
Danni, who has been tanning every month for four years, said: “The colour makes me look like I’m dirty, very dirty. I wouldn’t use that colour again but it hasn’t put me off fake tanning.
“I woke up to about thirty messages from people asking to see more after pictures.
“This has gone mad. I have had so many messages from family I haven’t spoken to in ages because they’ve seen the post gone viral.”
The photographs of the disastrous fake tan attracted more than 9,000 likes and shares online.
But Danni claims this isn’t her only fake tan disaster.
As well as patchy spots from sunbathing with fake tan on, she once wiped her face with tanning wipes instead of baby wipes and accidentally turned bright orange.
Danni said: “I am quite notorious for having bad tanning incidents.
“The funny thing is I did test [the Darker than Dark mousse] before I used it but I showered it off straight away because I didn’t want it to clash with my make-up.
“I am actually qualified to fake tan other people but I’ve never caused problems like this to other people.
“I hope people get a laugh out of it – because I did.”
St Moriz declined to comment.
