Princess Diana was married to Prince Charles, 72, for 15 years. Today, Paul Burrell has spoken out on their relationship and has shared why she did not like Chanel.
Paul appeared on ITV’s Lorraine to discuss his time working as Princess Diana’s butler in the royal household.
Princess Diana joined the Royal Family when she married Prince Charles.
The couple tied the knot on July 29, 1981 at Westminster Abbey.
They had two children together, Prince William, 38, and Prince Harry, 36, but the couple divorced in 1996.
Princess Diana spoke in the past about the relationship of Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
Speaking on Lorraine, Paul explained how this affected Princess Diana.
He said: “That affair actually ruled [Prince Charles’] life and Camilla’s presence was omnipresent.
“She’s always there and Diana had to battle with that from day one.”
Princess Diana’s style is often copied and her looks are considered iconic by many.
While she often wore pieces by designer brands, Paul explained she had to alter items from Chanel.
He explained this happened after the royal found a pair of Chanel cufflinks that had been gifted to Prince Charles by Camilla.
Paul continued: “On the Royal Britannia on her honeymoon, Diana found the cufflinks with the intertwined Cs and had an almighty row with her husband and said ‘what is this?’.
“It was a wedding gift from Camilla so that Charles would never forget her with the intertwined Cs.”
While Princess Diana had been seen in Chanel pieces, Paul explained she asked him to remove it’s signature branding from many items.
“From then on, I had to unpick all the intertwined Cs off her shoes and off her handbags,” Paul added.
“Of course, it was Chanel and most girls would die for them, but not the Princess.
“She didn’t want to be reminded of that affair that she had to live with.”
Princess Diana’s relationship with Prince Charles has been depicted on the new series of The Crown.
The couple first met when Prince Charles was dating her sister in 1977.
They soon began dating and the future King proposed in February 1981 and they married just months later.
