Thankfully doctors claim they have found the ideal position to ease the pain and prevent hours of tossing and turning.

According to a number of gynaecologists, lying in a foetal position is ideal for easing the pain of cramps.

Dr Lisa Lindley told Glamour magazine: "Sleeping in the foetal position takes pressure off the abdominal muscles."

This is down to the skeletal muscles around the abdomen relaxing, and the reduction in tension results in less cramps and pain.

Experts also revealed tips for avoiding any blood leakage in the night, which can be awkward and unpleasant for any woman.

One way to reduce leakage is to squeeze your legs together, according to period-tracking app Clue.

Dr Jennifer Wider also advised to avoid sleeping on your stomach, as they can squeeze your uterus so more blood is released. Not ideal.

Other tips for making your night more comfortable including taking painkillers such as ibuprofen before any night-time cramps set in.

You can also try showering before bed and using lavender-scented products.
