13 ways to help you save thousands of pounds in a year | The Sun

FRIDAY the 13th may be unlucky for some, but don’t leave your finances to fortune.

Here are 13 ways to help you save thousands of pounds in a year.

1) Shop through a cashback site to earn money from purchases. Quidco says its members earn an average £300 a year.

2) Swap your current account to bag free cash. First direct is currently offering new customers a £175 welcome (terms and conditions apply).

3) Shift your credit card debt to a zero per cent balance transfer card. Moneysupermarket found customers saved an average of £327 after making the switch.

4) Shop around for insurance. Households could save up to £492 by using a comparison site to find the best car and home cover, according to Comparethemarket.com.

7) Move savings to reap higher returns. Shifting £30,000 of cash to the best easy access savings account would leave you £628 a year better off than in the top branch account, according to Hargreaves Lansdown.

8) Hunt out the best mortgage rate. Switching from your lender’s standard variable rate to the average five-year fixed rate would save £1,330 on mortgage bills, according to broker L&C.
