'Avengers: Endgame': What Comes Next for Scarlett Johansson?

Scarlett Johansson is best known for her portrayal of Natasha Romanoff (AKA “Black Widow“) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Prior to this role, however, the 34-year-old actress had already amassed quite an impressive listing of acting credits, including The Horse Whisperer, which brought Johansson critical acclaim at only 13 years of age.

She’s also appeared in Eight Legged Freaks, Lost in Translation, The Perfect Score, The Spongebob SquarePants Movie, The Prestige, The Other Boleyn Girl, and We Bought A Zoo.

Many of the actors who have played major roles in the MCU will be retiring from their roles now that the filming of the final Avengers movie is complete. The good news is that Johansson will continue to reprise her role as Black Widow, despite this phase of stories in the MCU being complete.

But what is next for Johansson? In what films do we know she will once again reprise her role as Black Widow, and what other projects does she have underway? Here’s what we know.

Avengers: Endgame will hit theaters on April 26th this year, and will provide the answer to many long-awaited questions. Who actually disappeared during the snap, and will the remaining Avengers be able to “avenge the fallen” as the promotional posters released by Marvel have claimed?

The film will be the final installment of the Avenger’s films, and will show the remaining Avengers fighting to defeat Thanos once more. This time, to undo the unraveling of half the universe. Scarlett Johansson has been confirmed in her role, but it has not yet been confirmed yet whether or not she survived the snap – so fans will have to wait and find out when the film hits theaters.

Untitled Noah Baumbach Project

This film neither either a definitive title nor a release date, but is supposed to come out at some point later this year. The story will follow an unfolding divorce that proves to be difficult as it unfolds from New York City all the way to Los Angeles. Johansson will star along with Adam Driver and Laura Dern.

This film is set to release later in 2019, although there is not yet a definitive release date. Jojo Rabbit is a curious look at the world of a 10 year old boy who is ridiculed by his peers and misunderstood by his mother in Fascist Germany. As the innocent young German boy struggles to find out where he fits in, he resorts to the company of an imaginary friend… who just so happens to be Hitler. During his strange imaginings he believes himself to be in Hitler’s army.

‘Black Widow’

Yes, that’s right — it has been confirmed that Johansson’s beloved character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will finally be getting her own film. While there is not yet a known release date, it is assumed the film will appear in theaters in 2020 or 2021, depending on where it is placed in the new line of MCU films.

According to IMDB, Black Widow will reveal the backstory of the dangerous and seductive female who, at birth, was given to the KGB. As a child, she is taught to be the ultimate operative where others were playing with toys. But when the U.S.S.R. breaks up, the government tries to kill her. The film is a standalone (i.e. not part of the current film series’ story), and will take place 15 years after the Soviet Union has fallen – when Romanoff is living in America and working as a freelance operative.
