There are a lot of opinions when it comes to vaccines — and this is especially true in the celebrity world. The safety of vaccines was first publicly questioned by gastroenterologist Andrew Wakefield, who went on to publish research suggesting the connection between vaccines and autism. His research has since been debunked. Many, however, still consider these life-saving immunizations unsafe.
Here’s what the celebs who speak out against vaccines have to say for themselves.
1. Jenny McCarthy

Perhaps one of the most outspoken celebrities against vaccines, Jenny McCarthy has even written books regarding her stance. PBS’ Frontline reports McCarthy’s son, Evan, was diagnosed with autism after receiving several vaccines at age 2. And through a gluten-free diet and vitamins, McCarthy claims she helped her son’s condition greatly.
McCarthy has a lot to say about the link between autism and vaccines, including this: “If you ask 99.9% of parents who have children with autism if we’d rather have the measles versus autism, we’d sign up for the measles.” Yikes.

2. Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey has a major bone to pick with the pharmaceutical industry that’s producing vaccines, it seems. He tells The Huffington Post we should all consider the possibility that profits play a huge part in doctor’s pushing immunizations. Carrey also suggests there’s no possible way every vaccine has been studied for safety.
TIME reports the actor tweeted, “California Gov says yes to poisoning more children with mercury and aluminum” with mandatory vaccinations. “This corporate fascist must be stopped,” he goes on.

3. Charlie Sheen

People reports a spat between Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards showcased Sheen’s distaste for vaccines. Back in 2008, Sheen’s attorneys sent a letter to the pediatrician ex-wife Richards chose for their two children. The letter said Sheen did not approve of the doctor treating his kids any longer. The reason? He didn’t want his kids receiving vaccines.
In the end, Denise Richards got her way and vaccinated the kids. So, in true Charlie Sheen fashion, he actually didn’t say anything at all — he just paid the doctor the outstanding medical bill entirely in nickels.

When the mandatory vaccine law went into effect in California back in 2016, Kirstie Alley quickly criticized it. The Richest explains Alley’s not necessarily against vaccines in general, but she’s certainly opposed to the idea that parents no longer get to choose what goes into their kids’ bodies.
Vaccines have been tested for safety time and time again, of course, but that didn’t stop Alley from tweeting her feelings. “I’m not ANTI vaccines but we MUST take responsibility 4 choosing which ones WE give OUR children & ourselves. They aren’t ALL harmless,” she posts.

Rapper Kevin Gates has a lot to say about the benefits of avoiding vaccination, and it’s leaving the rest of us scratching our heads. The Source shares an interview from Rolling Stone showing what Gates has to say about the matter. In regards to his 3-year-old’s high intelligence level, he says, “I know why she’s so accelerated. She’s never been vaccinated before. … She doesn’t have mercury in her body and things of that nature.”
There’s a lot wrong with this statement — and Gates clearly doesn’t understand what he’s talking about when it comes to mercury in vaccines, either.

You know her from Clueless, but now you may remember Alicia Silverstone for her ridiculous anti-vaccine beliefs. The Daily Beast reports Silverstone wrote a book titled The Kind Mama — and within it, she offers all kinds of horrifying parental advice. She claims she can guide you through an “ailment-free pregnancy” by simply listening to your own body and trusting in nature.
As for vaccines, Silverstone says vaccines are basically just “aluminum and formaldehyde” and she personally has friends “whose babies were drastically affected” by vaccinations.

It’s troubling when one of the most influential people in the world starts speaking out against vaccines. Trump continues to suggest there’s a link between autism and vaccines — and he’s pushed this agenda for years, Fortune says. He’s even tweeted back in 2014, “I am being proven right about massive vaccinations — the doctors lied. Save our children & our future.”
Are we going to see legislation regarding vaccines in the future? It’s possible, since Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is siding with Trump on the issue, too.

Another outspoken celebrity opposing vaccinations is Rob Schneider. The Hollywood Reporter says Schneider was actually dropped by State Farm Insurance when he came out as an anti-vaxxer — but that didn’t stop him from sharing his views. In June of 2016, he released a statement attacking the pharmaceutical industry and public health officials. Part of the dramatic statement said if people must vaccinate their children, “then we are no longer a free people but live in state sponsored medical tyranny.”

Pitchfork reports he said he definitely isn’t taking the vaccine, as its surrounded in propaganda anyhow. “I do not trust those who make the vaccines, or the apparatus behind it all to push it on us thru fear,” he claims.
And that’s not all — Corgan also has a conspiracy claiming the swine flu is manmade anyhow. “If the virus comes to take me home, that is between me and the Lord,” he continues.

Some celebrities have pushed an anti-vaccine agenda since the ’90s. Verywell explains Lisa Bonet of Cosby Show fame went on The Donahue Show in 1990 and had a few choice words against vaccines to share. She said vaccinating your children could “introduce alien microorganisms into our children’s blood” which could potentially have serious long-term effects.
In regards to vaccinating her own daughter, Bonet notes, “It’s very scary and it’s very serious, and I think because I felt wrong doing it … that’s why I didn’t do it.”

Following in Jim Carrey’s footsteps, Selma Blair also had something to say about the California law requiring immunizations for public school children. On Twitter, she said, “Parental choice is our right. Most vaccinate. Let us choose.” And in yet another tweet, she pondered, “If people are vaccinating, why do they care about others?”
Twitter users blasted Blair for these comments, of course, as she’s not considering how herd immunity works for the greater good.

We haven’t heard much from Kristin Cavallari since MTV’s Laguna Beach, but now she’s decidedly stirring the pot. The Huffington Post reports Cavallari told Bravo’s Andy Cohen she has no plans on vaccinating either of her children. And even before that appearance, she told Fox Business show, The Independents, that she’s “read too many books about autism” to feel comfortable vaccinating her kids.
“There are very scary statistics out there regarding what is in vaccines and what they cause — asthma, allergies, ear infections, all kinds of things,” she said.

This outspoken talk show host always offers interesting commentary, but he may have gone too far with his opinions on the flu shot. The New York Times reports Bill Maher told his Twitter audience that anyone receiving the flu shot was an “idiot.” As for his explanation, he said he would never allow someone to stick “a disease” into his arm. Clearly, Maher doesn’t understand that the flu vaccine doesn’t contain a live virus.
Here’s something else troubling: Though pregnant women are vulnerable to serious complications from the swine flu, Maher encouraged them to skip the vaccine, too.

She’s not just an actress on The Big Bang Theory — she’s also a neuroscientist with a Ph.D. With her background in science, we would have pegged Mayim Bialik as a strong believer in vaccines. But People reports Bialik is a supporter of homeopathic medicine and is part of a “non-vaccinating family.”
After some backlash regarding her stance, Bialik took to Twitter to say, “i’m not anti. my kids are vaccinated. so much anger and hysteria. i hope this clears things up.” Considering she’s flipped her opinion dramatically, we don’t know what to believe.

The Dharma and Greg star has taken an active stance regarding her anti-vaccine agenda. According to Jezebel, Jenna Elfman was totally against the California bill stating children must be vaccinated to enter public school, as she thinks it takes away parental rights.
But it doesn’t just stop there, as Elfman was also seen at an anti-vaccine rally to warn others of the “dangers.” Additionally, she also posted on Facebook that she’s “astounded that we have to fight so hard for our parental rights as Americans, IN AMERICA.”
