A DJ has died after the stage he was performing on collapsed due to heavy winds.
Powerful winds blew over the stage structure at Atmosphere Festival last Saturday, causing the enormous video screen and tons of steel scaffolding to fall. DJ Kaleb Freitas was crushed while three others were injured.
Freitas, whose real name is Kalleby Freitas da Rosa, 30, was rushed to hospital with massive head injuries, but died soon after arrival.
The terrible event was captured on camera by many of the 5000 people attending the festival, which took place at Parque Estadual De Exposições Assis Brasil in Esteio, a small town near Porto Alegre in Southern Brazil. Heavy winds are obvious as raving fans cheer beneath the flapping, colorful banners that decorated the festival. Then those winds turn deadly as the stage buckles and then falls.
Festival organizers blame severe weather conditions for the tragedy. Meteorologists had called for torrential rains and substantial wind for Sunday, but appear to have come a day early.
Sergio Bandoca, a festival organizer in charge of the event space, described the scene. “It was madness. The scale of the tragedy could have been far worse. Things were flying all over the place. There was panic.”
Atmosphere Festival issued an official statement following the tragedy. “We always cherish the security of our audience, following all the processes, reports and authorizations requested by the local authorities. And to our audience we will keep them informed of all our actions to keep the truth about the facts that have occurred. We’re sorry, we lost a friend, an artist. Our priority is to assist the wounded and their families. We thank the military brigade and the fire department for all assistance.”
Messages of condolences surrounded the fallen DJ on Twitter and social media.
One Facebook user wrote a heartfelt eulogy in honor of DJ Freitas’ passing. “You were special Rest in peace, beautiful, enlightened! You made a lot of people happy, infected everyone who could be next to you! What a sad day I wanted so much to hold you! My heart is in pieces.”
