The fridge and freezer are two of the appliances which consume the most energy in the house but luckily, experts at KJ Refrigeration revealed that “checking the fridge temperature regularly can help reduce energy bills, as well as the amount of food that is wasted and therefore help save money”.
How cold should refrigerators be?
The experts at KJ Refrigeration explained that “for your food to stay safe and for the product to last longer, your fridge should be between 3C (37F) and 5C (40F)”.
“A freezer should have a temperature of -18C but can work down to -25C.”
They added: “The recommended temperature for your fridge is 5C, which is at the upper end of the range.
“If you keep a variety of products in your fridge, you may wish to keep the temperature slightly lower.
“Keep vegetables at a lower temperature than meat, such as 1C; meat should be stored at 4C.”
The experts explained that milk and dairy products should be stored at 4C in the fridge “to extend shelf life and preserve flavour”.
“To prevent the outside air from getting into your milk and dairy products, we suggest keeping them in the main compartment of your fridge rather than the door,” they added.
It may be easy for those with a touch screen on the refrigerator to adjust the temperature of the appliance, but what do the numbers on the thermostat control knob inside the fridge mean?
Experts at Maggiesovenservices explained the numbers on the fridge’s temperature dial indicate refrigerant power.
“The higher the number goes the colder the fridge will maintain. Setting it to five will make your fridge the coldest,” they explained.
“If you’re always storing plenty of food you need the colder settings (three to four). If you’re not storing as much choose between two and three,” they recommended.
How can people tell if the fridge is cold enough to avoid food waste?

In order to test that a refrigerator is cold enough, the experts recommended placing a liquid, such as water, in the main compartment for at least 24 hours.
Then remove it and check with a thermometer. They advised doing this test with a liquid as this is more likely to cool at the same temperature throughout rather than a solid substance that will cool at different rates due to its density.
From KJ Refrigeration, they explained people should avoid having a “full fridge” as this will consume more energy.
“The air circulation in a fridge helps keep food fresh, so you should keep your fridge around 25 percent full.
“This also allows the fridge to operate at maximum efficiency whilst keeping your food cold and saving you money in the long-term.”
By keeping the fridge 25 percent full, Britons will reduce bills as well as food waste.
They concluded: “Keeping your food at the correct temperature can help to keep it fresh for longer and therefore save you money by reducing the waste.”
