If you’re trying to lose weight and build muscle then you really should be doing both. Knowing what to eat and what to avoid can be tricky though, and it really depends on what your end goal is.
If you are trying to build muscle, then you’re making the job much harder for yourself by simply lifting weights alone. There are a number of foods and drinks that you should be consuming to help you hit your goals faster. First up, one that we all know is packed with protein, eggs. Not just the whites though, get those yolks down too. The yolks contain vitamin B12 which helps with fat breakdown and muscle contraction. If you’re having them for breakfast, get the french press on the go too. Caffeine is believed to directly stimulate the muscles and will also keep you going for longer in the gym.
Next up is something not so obvious, almonds. The nuts contain vitamin E which can help to prevent damage to the muscles after a heavy work out. As little as a couple of handfuls a day should do the trick. Yogurt is next on the agenda, and there’s no need to stick to the healthier options in this department. In fact, full-fat yogurt with fruit in will deliver extra carbohydrates to your body, helping to reduce postexercise protein breakdown.
Along with all the items listed above, there is also the obvious to add on. Things like lean beef, salmon, and perhaps most importantly, water. Your muscles are 80% water after all, so it is important to stay hydrated at all times if you want to see significant muscle growth. The less water in your body, the longer it takes for it to use protein to build muscle.
