There has been several devastatingly real Christmas films being shared widely on social media this year.
The latest is an animation by the Cats Protection charity, that tells the true story of an 12-year-old girl, Evie, who becomes very unwell with bone cancer and has to leave her beloved pet cat Genie at home while she goes into hospital.
Cats Protection uploaded the heartbreaking film to Facebook, writing: "Inspired by the real lives of National Cat Awards winners, Evie and Genie, #GeniesChristmasWish tells the moving tale of a girl’s friendship with her cat – through thick and thin…"
It tracks the girl’s friendship with her cat, as she becomes sick, goes to hospital for gruelling treatment and returns home to find the pet patiently waiting – after becoming very lonely without her.
People on social media have said the heartbreaking film has had them "in tears", with some admitting to "uncontrollably sobbing" at the story.
The film also resonated with people on Facebook who have been seriously unwell and had to leave their pets at home like Evie did.
One said: "Wow. This moved me in ways I cannot describe. I went through this same situation 2 years ago. Coming home to my kitty was one of the happiest days of my life"
Another wrote: "This is so beautiful. Reduced me to tears. Particularly poignant for me, as two years ago I spent five days in hospital with sepsis, whilst having chemotherapy.
"It was just before Christmas, too… I missed my cats terribly and apparently they kept waiting outside my bedroom door for me to reappear…"
Cats Protection is one of the UK’s leading feline welfare charities and helps around 200,000 cats and kittens every year.
