Here’s a full guide of supermarket opening times over the Christmas period
It’s Christmas time, which means all supermarkets including Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl and more will be working on different opening times over the coming week and next.
While all stores will be shut on Christmas Day, shoppers can still nip in for emergency supplies on Christmas Eve. Some stores will also remain shut on Boxing Day, on December 26.
Another thing to note is that coronavirus restrictions remain in place at all stores. This means you will need to wear face coverings inside unless you're exempt.
So, if you’re planning a trip to supermarkets in the coming week, here are all the opening times you need to be aware of.
When will supermarkets shut on Christmas eve?
Aldi – has confirmed its stores will remain open from 7am until 6pm on Christmas Eve this year.
Asda – opening times vary for Asda stores across the country through the Christmas period. Some will open from 6am and shut at 7pm on Christmas Eve. Best thing to do is use Asda’s online store finder tool to check timings of your nearest branch.
Iceland – Some Iceland stores will be open from the slightly shorter time of 7am until 5pm on Christmas Eve, but few stores will open even later at 9 am. You can use the Iceland store finder to check opening times of your nearest shop.
Lidl – On Christmas Eve, most Lidl stores will be open from 7am until 6pm or 7pm. To be safe, the store recommends you check the store locator as opening times can vary.
Marks and Spencers – A majority of the M&S stores will be running on shorter hours on Christmas Eve. The food hall opening times vary as well, but some will open as early as 6am and will close at either 7pm or 8pm.
Morrisons – Most Morrisons shops will be open from 6am to 6pm on Christmas Eve. Again, it’s best to use its store finder tool to check exact times of your local branch.
Sainsbury's – most Sainsbury’s will be open between 6am and 7pm on Xmas Eve, with smaller outlets remaining open until later around 9 pm.
Tesco – Bigger Tesco shops will be open any time from midnight onward until 7pm on Christmas Eve, while some smaller Tesco Express outlets may be open from 6am until 10pm.
Waitrose – On Christmas Eve, the majority of Waitrose stores will open from 7am until 6pm.
When will supermarkets shut on Christmas day?
- Aldi – All Aldi stores are then due to be shut on Christmas Day
- Asda – All stores are due to be shut on Christmas Day
- Iceland –All Iceland shops are closed on Christmas Day
- Lidl – Christmas Day will then see all Lidl shops closed for business
- Marks and Spencers – All M&S branches will be shut on Christmas Day
- Morrisons – Morrisons will shut its all stores completely on Christmas Day
- Sainsbury's –All Sainsbury’s shops are shut on Christmas Day
- Tesco – Christmas Day will see all Tesco stores closed for staff to spend time with families
- Waitrose – All Waitrose stores will be shut on Christmas Day. However,some branches in Welcome Break motorway service stations and Shell forecourts may be open 24 hours.
Will supermarkets be open on Boxing Day?
Aldi – Aldi will be closed on Boxing Day, before opening on December 27 from 8am to 8pm
Asda –On Boxing Day, timings for stores will vary but some will be open from either 10am until 4pm or 11am until 5pm. Opening times on December 27 will see some shops welcoming customers from 8am until 8pm.
Iceland –Iceland shops will remain closed on Boxing Day before reopening on December 27, with some stores working from 9am until 5pm and others open from 8am until 8pm.
Lidl -Boxing Day hours at Lidl vary but some stores will be open from 10am until 4pm. The next day, most Lidl outlets will be open from the longer hours of 8am until 10pm.
Marks and Spencers – All M&S stores will be shut on Boxing Day, before opening on December 27 with some branches running from 9am until 6pm.
Morrisons – Morrisons will be closed completely on Boxing Day, On December 27, most of its England and Wales branches open from 7am until 10pm.
Sainsbury's – Sainsbury’s will be closed on Boxing Day. The larger stores will be open from8am until 8pm on December 27, with smaller ones working from 7am to 10pm.
Tesco –Boxing Day hours at Tesco will be shorter than usual. Larger Tesco stores will open from 10-4 or 11-5. Most Tesco Express outlets will be open from from around 9am until 7pm. On December 27, larger Tesco shops will open from 8am until 6pm and smaller ones from 6am to 11pm.
Waitrose -All Waitrose stores will be closed on Boxing Day and then some shops will open from 8am until 6pm on December 27.
