How to freshen up your home on the cheap after months of lockdown

ALL this time indoors over the past few months might have left your home in need of a refresh.

It could be constant cooking smells, piles of washing-up or extra rubbish in the bins that needs sorting.

Instead of splashing out on new sprays and detergents, raid your kitchen cupboards to “clean up” on the cheap.

Air we go. To mask nasty niffs without buying pricey air fresheners, fill a saucepan with water and add a sliced lemon, a few sprigs of rosemary and ½tspn vanilla extract.

As the mixture simmers, it will create a sweet aroma that wafts across your kitchen.

Fur real. Pet owners can freshen things up by sprinkling baking soda across their carpets, mattresses and sofas.

Use a brush to spread the baking soda into the fabric, then let it sit overnight before vacuuming off in the morning.

Shoe dunnit. With the gyms shut, loads of us have taken up running or outdoor sports . . . and that means funky trainers as well as muddy kit.

But don’t put up with stinky footwear smells. Instead, put a few tea bags inside each shoe and leave them for 24 hours in a warm, dry place. Sorted!

Ground up. If your fridge isn’t smelling too fresh, you can help to rectify this by putting a bowl of dry, fresh coffee grounds in the bottom. It helps to soak up bad smells. The same trick works just as well in your car.

Simply place the grounds inside a container with holes punched in the lid and leave inside your vehicle.

Bin-credible. It goes without saying that bins can give off bad smells. Sort this problem by wiping a solution of water and white vinegar around the inside and outside of yours, then leave it to dry.

Before putting in a new liner, coffee granules sprinkled in the bottom can help your bin stay fresh. Easy.
