A grand mansion which once hosted Winston Churchill but was left desolate and half burnt down following a tragic fire is up for sale – and has had its price cut by £200,000 to £750,000.

Bontddu Hall, Dolgellau, Gwynedd, has in the past also hosted Neville Chamberlain and actor Richard Burton on visits to the Welsh countryside.

But almost three years ago it was hit by tragedy when it was badly damaged by a serious fire which killed the owner’s wife. 

Agent Christie and Co said: ‘It has hosted a number of famous guests over the years including Sir Winston Churchill.

‘Unfortunately the property has recently suffered a serious fire and is no longer able to be utilised as a property in its given state although the structure, in part, still stands.

‘Therefore, the opportunity is being offered to the market predominantly for redevelopment of the existing hall, or for an incoming buyer to develop as required.’

Firefighters were called to Bontddu Hall near Dolgellau in June 2020 after receiving reports of a large fire at the building, ITV reports.

A woman was pulled from the building, but then died at the scene, fire officials said at the time.  

Burton stayed at the luxury three star hotel, near Barmouth, when he made his 1949 film debut The Last Days of Dolwyn.

The 20-room mansion became the jewel of north Wales attracting wealthy clients including former Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.

A London-based businessman won permission to turn it from a hotel into a home back in 2004.

Tourism chiefs slammed the conversion of the hotel as a ‘sad loss’ for an area which has already suffered hundreds of tourism job losses.

The hall was built originally in 1873 for a wealthy English family.

The hall was built originally in 1873 for a wealthy English family

Later the hall passed into the ownership of the Hall family who also owned other hotels in the region.

The price has been cut twice from its original asking price of £950,00 – first last spring down to £850,000 and now down to £750,000.

The Christie spokesman said: ‘Bontddu Hall Hotel once traded as a successful business and could again. However, due to the condition of the building it would need to be completely re-built before any business could trade.

‘The site offers a range of possibilities for a buyer depending on their requirements.’
