Marks and Spencer: Shopping rules customers must follow as M&S reopens branches

Like many retailers, Marks and Spencer (M&S) has changed operations during the coronavirus crisis. They have updated opening hours, introduced social distancing measures and launched delivery food boxes. These are the latest shopping rules that should be followed as branches open again.

Marks and Spencer retail stores closed in March following advice from the government.

However, Foodhall branches were allowed to stay open and provide essential food services.

With coronavirus lockdown restrictions starting to ease, M&S clothing stores in England opened again earlier this month.

This week, locations in Scotland and Wales have been allowed to reopen with new social distancing measures in stores.

When visiting branches, customers will notice it is a very different experience to what it was before.

Social distancing

As more clothing stores reopen, the retailer has ensured social distancing rules are in place.

A statement from Marks and Spencer said: “To help keep all our customers and colleagues well, our stores will have additional social distancing measures in place. Please be kind and give everyone space.”

These include limiting how many customers can shop at one time and ensuring everyone keeps a distance.

“Our stores are carefully managing the number of people shopping at any one time,” it continued.

“We have introduced floor markings to ensure a two-metre space is maintained between customers as well as installing protective perspex screens at checkouts.”

Hand sanitiser is available by the entrance of stores and there is a payment limit of £45 at clothing tills.

Opening times

In Foodhall branches, opening hours were updated to make it easier for NHS workers and elderly customers to shop.

Elderly and vulnerable customers can shop early on Mondays and Thursdays, and emergency workers get private shopping on Tuesdays and Fridays.

“We want to make sure everyone has access to the items they need,” the website states.

“So we are setting aside the first hour of trading on certain days for our older and vulnerable customers, and for our brilliant NHS staff, carers and emergency workers.

“For older and vulnerable customers, this is on Mondays and Thursdays. For NHS staff, carers and emergency workers, this is on Tuesdays and Fridays.”

Returns policy

While clothing stores have opened in locations across the UK, fitting rooms remain closed.

This means items need to be purchased in stores and tried on at home.

The retailer has extended its refund policy to 90 days to make it easier for customers to take unwanted items back.
