My partner lazes about at home all day on furlough while I am busy doing my job

DEAR DEIDRE: EVERY day my furloughed partner sits at home being no use whatsoever while I’m working my socks off for him.

I work for a firm that makes medical equipment. It’s been really busy since Covid arrived.

He works there too but as he is mildly asthmatic the company told him he would be safer at home and furloughed him – which he was OK with.

I’ve told him he should either be back in the workplace and doing his bit or, if he’s at home, he ought to be taking the workload off me.

He just sits there watching me cleaning and cooking and then washing up.

I’m falling to bits with the strain of it all.

I love him a lot but this doesn’t seem fair and I’m at my wits end.

DEIDRE SAYS: You are right – it’s not fair and you need to explain that to him.

If he’s home all day he can take a whole load of work off your plate and so make life much better for you.

If talking won’t work then stop cooking and clearing for him.

You may have to live in a mess for a while but he’ll get the idea.
