DEAR DEIDRE: LIFE was brilliant until Covid hit us. I have a beautiful partner who is about to give birth to our first child, a son, and a job I love. But now I’m not bringing in the money I need to save for a mortgage – or anything for that matter.
I feel desperate.

I work for a friend who has his own business designing, making and fitting kitchens.
Lots of people cancelled orders and workplace restrictions mean we are slower at getting through the work so the income is much slower to come in.
My monthly pay halved and I can’t get help because I am self-employed but only since the start of this year. I am 31.
I’d make more money driving a delivery van but I don’t want to let my friend down. He says things will get better but I feel so stuck.
DEIDRE SAYS: Check the rules about financial help for the self-employed, which have changed. I find Martin Lewis’s website moneysavingexpert.com the clearest.
Van driving can be gruelling. Stick with your friend and the job you love if you can keep your head above water for now. The pandemic will ease and you can get back to saving.
