A lawyer in an art world case has stepped down after a dispute with the gallery he was representing.
We reported that hot artist Derek Fordjour — whose work is collected by Jay-Z and Drake — is being sued by his former gallerist Robert Blumenthal for $1.45 million. The gallery alleges it paid Fordjour a $20,000 advance back in 2014 to deliver 20 works, but that he only handed over 13.
Fordjour’s side fired back in court papers that the suit is “frivolous” and should be tossed — plus he wants his art back.
Now Blumenthal and his own lawyer Mark Seidenfeld are in a dispute: Seidenfeld has exited the case and says he’s filing a “charging lien” of over $28,000 against the gallery attached to “any verdict, settlement, judgment or final order in its favor,” according to a legal letter.
Seidenfeld commented that his compensation is “many months overdue,” while Blumenthal told us Seidenfeld was “misrepresenting the retainer agreement, which he refuses to honor.” Fordjour’s side did not comment. Stay tuned.
