Style Tips We Learned From Meghan Markle’s Royal Appearances

When it comes to her wardrobe, Meghan Markle knows a thing or two about how to dress like a royal and stay true to her personal style. She prefers pieces that are trendy, yet sophisticated — i.e., queen-approved — and doesn’t rely on bright colors or patterns to make a bold statement. Instead, the royal-to-be relies on simple fabrics and neutral colors to create a lasting impression.

Want to learn how to style your outfits like Meghan Markle? Ahead, we share the top styling tips we learned from some of her most memorable royal appearances.

1. Know what works

As the newest member of the royal family, Meghan Markle has to wear a hat to all formal daytime events. That said, she has already found a style that works for her. So far, the royal-to-be has been spotted in two similar styles — a white beret on Commonwealth Day and a round Philip Treacy cap on Christmas day — that compliment her facial structure.

2. Color coordinate

The royal family loves to color coordinate their looks — and Meghan Markle is no exception. While attending a Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, the royal-to-be was spotted in a navy and white ensemble that not only looked great on its own, but coordinated with Kate Middleton’s all navy look, too.

In addition to coordinating outfits, the future sister-in-laws wore (somewhat) matching shoes! At first glance, Markle’s Manolo Blahnik pumps looks identical to Middleton’s Gianvito Rossi pumps.

3. Commit to a theme

When visiting Scotland, plaid is a must. While on a royal visit to Edinburgh, Scotland Meghan Markle paid tribute to the country in a double-breasted plaid Burberry coat. Keeping with the green theme, she accessorized with a Strathberry Mini East West Crossbody Bag in “Bottle Green.”

4. Choose flattering silhouettes

Black trousers have become a staple in Meghan Markle’s royal wardrobe. Especially ones with flattering silhouettes, like the Veronica Beard Adley Pants she wore on a tour of the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. The high waist and floor-length wide legs create an elongated and slimming effect.

To add to the look — and the flattering appeal — Markle styled her wide-leg trousers with a black turtleneck sweater, tucked in to accentuate her waistline.

5. Show some skin

It may be against royal style rules to show skin, but Meghan Markle found a modest way to do so while on a royal visit to Cardiff Castle. Pictured here in a plaid Off-The-Shoulder Jacket by Theory, the royal-to-be is clearly finding ways to combine her trendy style with the royal family’s “smart” dress code.

When you live in the city, comfort is key … even for royals. Meghan Markle often opts for trousers with knitted fabrics — like the plush AllSaints sweater she wore to an International Women’s Day engagement — for a chic take on comfortable style.

Meghan Markle is known for wearing neutral colors. But, every once in awhile, she’ll add a pop of color in the most simple way. While visiting Cardiff Castle, Markle sported a figure-flattering Stella McCartney coat, Tabitha Simmons ankle boots, black dress pants, and a DeMellier London Mini Venice bag in “Forest Grain.”

Unlike the queen and Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle has a more neutral-colored wardrobe. For the most part, the royal-to-be wears a lot of navy, forest green, black, tan, and brown.
