Woman attempts to return socks but is knocked back by sales assistant

Should you be allowed to return USED socks? Woman attempts to hand in once-worn pair of socks – but is turned away because she washed them

  • Woman has attempted to return a pair of socks with a hole in them to Best & Less
  • She washed the socks before bringing them back in which sparked a debate
  • The lady claims the assistant wouldn’t take the socks because they were washed
  • But are you allowed to return a dirty item – or is this a case-by-case basis?

A woman has posted a furious rant on Facebook after she was almost knocked back from returning a pair of socks with holes in them to a department store because she had washed them.

The lady in question couldn’t believe there was a rule relating to whether the item had to be ‘dirty’ or not in the returns policy.

‘I was in Best & Less returning socks with a hole in them – only worn once. The (young) sales girl asked if I’d washed them,’ she wrote online.

“Yes,” I replied. “We can’t usually accept something once it’s been washed.”

‘I look at her oddly then ask if they prefer people return dirty socks. She shrugs and waits until the manager walks over.

‘They “allowed” me to swap them over. How big of you Best & Less.’

It’s not known which store she went into for the return, or what kind of socks they were, but the woman was able to successfully get her money back.

The returns policy on the Best & Less website states that they will accept returns if the ‘quality’ of the good is compromised by poor fabric or manufacturing

The returns policy on the Best & Less website states that they will accept returns if the ‘quality’ of the good is compromised by poor fabric or manufacturing.

‘Fabric issues like the garment shrinks excessively or doesn’t hold its shape, fades or runs after being washed according to care instructions, or the fabric has a pull or tear or hole before being worn’ governs a refund, for example.

You only need to provide some kind of proof of purchase to make the exchange.
