Artist of the Week: Nicki Minaj

The ‘Anaconda’ hitmaker becomes the only female emcee to have a top 10 hit on Hot 100 chart for eight years straight after ‘Chun-Li’ soars to the top 10 of the chart.

Going on a hiatus doesn’t make Nicki Minaj lose her touch. Instead, she proves to the world that she’s still one of the biggest female rappers in the hip-hop industry when her latest single “Chun-Li” soared to the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

“Chun-Li” launched at No. 14 on the Streaming Songs chart and jumped twelve spots to No. 4 on Digital Song Sales chart. The new milestone marked her the only female emcee to have a top 10 hit for eight consecutive years. Meanwhile, her other new single “Barbie Tingz” ascended from No. 83 to No. 25 on the chart.

Both songs were well received by fans and music critics, with John Kenned from XXL saying that “Chun-Li” is “open enough for Nicki to get her bars off a la her mixtape days.” On the other hand, Bianca Gracie from Billboard called “Barbie Tingz” a “juicy braggadocious anthem laid atop a throwback production by Chevy Music that is pure New York City.”

A vertical music video for “Chun-Li” was released on April 14. She will also premiere another music video for the track as well as a visuals for “Barbie Tingz”. While “Chun-Li” music video is directed by Steven Klein, the director for the latter is still unknown.

Following the release of the tracks, Nicki is set to perform in the May 19 season finale of “Saturday Night Live“. She will serve as the musical guest, with Tina Fey taking the host duty. The “Anaconda” hitmaker hints that she will debut a new song during her upcoming performance, calling the song her “fave on the album.”

Despite the fact that her forthcoming album still doesn’t have a title or a release date, it has confirmed that she’s already finalized dates for her next world tour. Nicki will travel the United States before visiting the rest of the globe.
