Elvis Presley found his life changing in front of his eyes in 1964. Upon arriving at the set for his film Viva Las Vegas, the King met Swedish-American actor Ann-Margret for the first time. While the pair hit it off as soon as they met, their relationship continued to blossom into a passionate love affair which spanned an entire year.
Elvis and Ann-Margret spent most of their time together, and quickly became the hot topic in the press.
Eventually, in 1965, Ann-Margret was asked about her relationship with Elvis, and her answer spun out of control.
The newspapers published that the couple were soon to be engaged – enraging Elvis’ fiancée Priscilla Presley.
Shortly after, Elvis broke off the relationship, and married Priscilla.
Over the years many of Elvis’ friends spoke out about the King’s relationships, but they all agreed he was simply infatuated by Ann-Margret.
While he did go on to get together with other women after he split with Priscilla, Elvis was supposedly never in love as deeply as he was with Ann-Margret.
According to the Elvis Biography website, the King asked his road manager, Joe Esposito, what was so special about Ann-Margret.
Joe simply replied: “She’s the female you.”
It had already been noted how similar Elvis and Ann-Margret were as soon as they met – and their similarities may have kept their bond extremely tight.
Unfortunately for the couple, the added complication of Priscilla meant they would not be together forever – despite their desire to be.
Another reason Ann-Margret and Elvis were such a good couple came down to the fact she got along with the King’s entourage – the Memphis Mafia.
And, in the 1994 biography “Elvis and the Memphis Mafia” his cousin spoke out about Ann-Margret.

The cousin, Billy Smith, told of his hopes for Elvis to marry Ann-Margret over Priscilla.
Apparently, Priscilla was not as accepted by Elvis’ friends and colleagues as well as Ann-Margret.
It was because of this that Billy explained his hopes for Elvis’ future.
He wrote: “My personal desire was for Elvis to marry Ann.”
Billy continued: “She made his life easier because she understood him and didn’t make any demands on him.
“She even understood his need for [the Memphis Mafia].”
Just a few years later, Ann-Margret went on to marry actor and TV producer Roger Smith.
Ann-Margret and Roger were married until 2017, when he tragically died at the age of 84.
