Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey’s father died while “making love” to his mother but Matthew always knew this was how he’d planned to pass, while his mother wanted the whole neighbourhood to see his manhood.
McConaughey told Marc Maron that “all the neighbours came out on the street” when the ambulance arrived.
He explained: “They came and told me later that my mum […] wouldn’t let the paramedics cover him. She kept ripping the sheet off, going: ‘Uh uh, I want the world to see why his nickname was Big Jim, don’t you cover him!”

In Matthew’s book Greenlights, the Academy Award winner openly discussed his life, career, his parent’s rocky relationship and the unconventional way his father passed.
He explained: “I got a call from my Mom. ‘Your dad died.’ My knees buckled. I couldn’t believe it. He was my dad. Nobody or nothing could kill him. Except for mom. He’s always told me and my brothers: ‘Boys, when I go, I’m gonna be makin’ love to your mother’.”
According to the actor, it was exactly how his father would have liked to go and in 1992 his father “had a heart attack when he climaxed”.
Matthew’s father James and his mother Kay had a tumultuous relationship and had an on-again, off-again type of marriage.
They repeatedly divorced and married each other throughout their lives but McConaughey noted that “those moments were so quickly superseded by the love and humanity.”
He told fans that they were “violent at times,” but that was “how they communicated”.
During a Red Table Talk, Kay opened up about the intimate experience of her husband's death and recalled how it all played out.
She said: “My husband died making love to me and I remember saying, when he fell back: ‘What’s the matter, big boy? I wear you out?’ No response, no response, and I’m thinking: ‘Oh my god, something’s wrong!”
Kay then ran out into the street to call for help from passersby – who eventually got an unexpected eyeful when she refused to let James' penis be covered.
In 2020, after his father had been dead for almost three decades, the Hollywood star attempted to set his mother up with pal Hugh Grant’s widowed father.
He spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the set-up before they met and hinted that they would hit it off.
Matthew cheekily joked: “His father’s 91, my mother’s 88. Yeah, why not? Next week they’re supposed to meet and we probably won’t see them for the rest of the night.”
