Jamelia has been in the spotlight for more than two decades during which she released her debut album Drama in 2000.
Since then she has had great success with pop hits such as Superstar, Thank You and Beware of the Dog.
The singer has always been vocal about her views and has had plenty of drama in her personal life.
To celebrate her joining Hollyoaks, Daily Star has taken a look into the British singer’s career.
Special soap role
Jamelia is set to join Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks as part of a guest role.
The 40-year-old will be in a special Black to Front episode in a bid to promote diversity and black talent on the channel.
The Birmingham-born star is set to play Sharon Bailey who is a friend of Martin Deveraux, played by Kelle Bryan, and the daughter of Pearl, played by newbie Dawn Hope.
It will be an hour-long episode of the popular soap which will be part of a birthday celebration storyline.
It will see Sharon confide in Jamelia’s character about her cancer battle.
Speaking about her role, Jamelia said: “Filming Hollyoaks has been the most fantastic experience.
“I’ve felt like I’ve been around family, I’ve felt so comfortable and so joyous. It’s just been amazing. I can’t believe this is supposed to be work.
“For me, I think what’s important about this episode is that we’re showing the diversity within Black existence, and I think it’s really important for that.
“So often Black people are portrayed in a monolithic kind of way, and I feel that an episode like this is really important to show the diversity within Black personhood. I’m really honoured to be included in this episode. It’s been fantastic.”
The Black to Front episode will be on our screens on Friday, September 10 on Channel 4 at 6:30pm but you can view it a day earlier on Thursday, September 9 on E4 at 7pm.

Acting hasn’t always been in Jamelia’s blood as she first found fame with singing.
Jamelia has three Top 40 albums and eight Top 10 hit singles under her belt.
Meanwhile, she has won four MOBO awards and amassed nine Brit Award nominations over her successful career.
The mum-of-three has also had a successful modelling career landing contracts with Reebok, Pretty Polly and BMW.

More recently Jamelia has moved into the world of TV both hosting and becoming a judge and panellist on shows.
The outspoken singer ruffled a few feathers on ITV daytime show Loose Women where she was a panellist.
However, she wasn’t invited back on the popular programme in 2017 after she sparked outrage from viewers over her plus-size clothes comments.
The star said she didn’t think it was a good idea for shops to be stocking plus-size clothes as it would help “facilitate people living an unhealthy lifestyle".
She said: "In the same way I don't believe that a size zero should be available – it's not a healthy size for an average woman to be. I don't believe they [high street stores] should be providing clothes for below that range or above that range.
"Yes, have specialist shops, but you should feel uncomfortable if you are unhealthy… to be available in every high street store, I don't think that's right."
Speaking about her departure from Loose Women, Jamelia told the Birmingham Mail that she wasn’t “formerly sacked".
She continued: “The show is going in a different direction at the moment and I don’t seem to be a part of that narrative.”
However, the popular singer has always defended her comments and admitted she felt the backlash was due to the colour of her skin.
She told Heart Online: "I'm not going to beat around the bush, I think when you are black and you are in the public eye and you are being vocal and speaking out on issues – you are not ordinarily allowed to have certain conversations.
"[But] it's very important to be bold and brave, in particular as a mother of daughters, I want to teach them that they have to say what they think even if it affects them adversely. I don't mind that it's affected me financially, because emotionally I feel as though I'm living in my truth."
Since she departed from the show, Jamelia has had successful stints as a judge on Move It Like Michael Jackson as well as fronting thought-provoking documentaries such as The House That Made Me and Shame About Single Mums.

Jamelia managed to get to 36 weeks before she gave birth to her daughter True, who arrived happy and healthy.
Speaking about the experience she told Hello! Magazine: "I didn't know your waters could break and you can still carry the baby.
"There are so many problems that come along with that happening. It was a really scary time for all of us.
