New Japanese-style pod hotel to open in Sussex – with tiny sleeping capsules for £30

A JAPANESE-style pod hotel is opening in Sussex – with tiny sleeping capsules for just £30.

Common in cities in Japan due to their space-saving rooms, guests can now try it out for themselves in the UK.

Pod Central, opening in St Leonard's in Hastings in June, will have 16 lockable capsule pods measuring up to 1.3m x 2.2m, each with bedding, USB ports and plugs, reading lights, ear plugs and fans.

Free Wifi is included, along with storage lockers and towels, while shared showers, toilets and hair dryers are on-site with eco-toiletries.

Owner Mia Preston said she decided to open it in the UK to offer budget stays for people.

Having turned an old grocery store into the pod hotel, the website explains: "We’re not like the wonderful East Sussex hotels – we’re ‘no frills’ accommodation.

"It’s something completely new for the area – budget stays for people who need affordable overnight stays.

"We’re five minutes away from St Leonard’s Warrior Square railway station, close to bus stops and right the middle of local shops, cafes, restaurants, the beach and lots of local entertainment..

The firsts capsule hotel opened in the UK in 2018.

St Christopher's Inn at the Village was the first hostel in the UK to offer the capsule bedrooms, with 36 pods stacked on top of each other.

With a 24hr reception, they come with clean bedding, a black-out blind instead of a door at the entrance, a reading light and complimentary earplugs.

There are also plugs and USB ports, as well as free WiFi, for any guests who want to play on their phones or laptops before bed.

Beds cost from £19 in low season and from £34 in high season.

In Singapore, a luxury capsule hotel MET A Space Pod offers capsules for £31 a night while in China, you can pay just 70p per half hour to rent out sleeping pods.

Premier Inn has their own "pod" rooms which are half the size of their normal rooms, for just £19 a night.

Airports also have pods for people who want to nap while waiting for their flight.
