Ms Kirkwood told BBC Breakfast that Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern parts of England will all see heavy rain throughout Tuesday. The BBC meteorologist outlined a Met Office amber weather warning for flooding and disruption as up to 120mm of rain is expected to fall.
Ms Kirkwood said: “We are looking at heavy rain today across parts of Northern Ireland, northwest England and Scotland.
“We could see some light rain across parts of southern England with some drizzle.
“Heavy rain will move in across the northwest of Wales.
“The southeast will brighten up after a fairly dull start.
“The Met Office has an amber weather warning out for the rain, up to 120mm could fall.
“That is falling on the already saturated ground so there is a real risk of flooding and disruption.”
She added: “As we head on through the evening and overnight we continue with the rain, it edges a bit more into Wales.
“Further south it is drier but there will be quite a lot of cloud around.”
BBC Weather: Warm conditions expected across parts of Europe
BBC Weather Europe meteorologist Ben Rich forecast sunshine over the next couple of days for some parts of the continent.
Mr Rich said: “As we move from Tuesday to Wednesday we will see some patchy fog in central Europe, some of that could be dense.
“We will see plenty of sunshine through much of the continent.
“There will be some cloud drifting into parts of Turkey, it will be just 9C in Istanbul as well.

“On the other side, you can see it is fine in Madrid with 15C and Lisbon getting up to 18C.”
He added: “This frontal system may feed some rain into the far northwestern system and certainly some rain into the western side of the UK.
“As we look further ahead a slight shift in wind direction will chill things down.
“This will apply mostly to London and Paris but temperatures still well above where they should be for this time of year.
