Ben Quartermaine, 15, had been swimming in the sea near Clacton Pier, Essex, on Thursday, when he got into trouble.
Police launched a desperate search that lasted several days, today confirming a body had been found by a member of the public about 8am.
Essex Police said: "We were called following reports that a body had been found near to Clacton Pier shortly before 8am this morning, Saturday, July 28.
"Police have provisionally identified him as 15-year-old Ben Quartermaine."
They added: "The death is not being treated as suspicious but the cause of death is currently unknown and enquiries are ongoing."
The case will now be referred to the coroner.
Ben had been swimming with another teenager when the pair got into trouble after they went in the water near Clacton Pier to cool down.
The boy Ben was swimming with was eventually saved by a lifeboat crew and was reunited with his family.
Scuba divers had been called in to help with the search for Ben.
Police were also seen combing the beach for clues.
