A British-born former WWE wrestler has been re-hired by the sports entertainment giant for the third time in five years.
Birmingham-born Drake Maverick, whose real name is James Curtin, was sacked by the company twice during the pandemic – first on April 15, 2020 due to “budget cuts”, then again on November 18, 2021 for similar reasons.
It had been suggested that he was ready to make a return to the UK, to restart his career on the independent scene, but he has seemingly now been rehired for the third time.
However, it appears that he will not be lacing up his boots and stepping into the squared circle this time, as, according to several news outlets, he has joined the company's creative team.
And it is also being claimed that he actually rejoined the company three weeks ago.
After being rehired back in 2020, he told the Daily Star: “I’m a small guy, I’m 5 foot 4 inches tall, and a lot of people will say that I shouldn’t even be here right now.
“I’m knocking down walls every damn day. It’s tough and it’s a slog, but I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.
“I’m a very passionate guy and I’m a very salty little man sometimes!
“I think that’s a British-ism as well, but I am just so comfortable being the person I am. I am happy that I am a smaller competitor, rather than being a larger one or a medium-sized one.
“I wouldn’t be as special if I wasn’t me, and this industry is about special people of different sizes.
“My friends are like Braun Strowman who is [7ft] big, man. That’s a special kind of human, and when you’re in airports, heads turn – heads don’t tend to turn when little James walks by.
The 39-year-old, who is married to fellow wrestler Renee Michelle, started his career in the UK, wrestling under the names of Spud or Rockstar Spud.
He shot to fame with Impact Wrestling in 2012, as part of its acclaimed British Boot Camp reality series, and joined WWE as the on-screen General Manager of the 205 Live show in 2017.
He is an eight-time WWE 24/7 titleholder, and a two-time Impact Wrestling X Division champion.
