Colorado Springs officer shoots armed fugitive who pulled gun, police say

An armed fugitive who pulled a gun was shot Thursday morning by a Colorado Springs officer, police said.

The incident happened in the 1700 block of Aeroplaza Drive, the Colorado Springs Police Department said in a 12:28 p.m. Thursday message posted on X, the social media site formerly called Twitter.

The U.S. Marshals Service and officers with the Colorado Department of Parole contacted local police about the fugitive, who police described as “a violent felon with multiple felony arrest warrants.”

The man was in a vehicle in a parking lot and authorities attempted to take the suspect into custody, police said.

“The suspect initially attempted to escape in the vehicle and when that was unsuccessful, he attempted to run towards the front doors” of a nearby business. A police dog was released and contacted the suspect, who allegedly pulled a handgun. A least one Colorado Springs officer fired at least one shot at the man.

Officers rendered medical aid at the scene and the suspect, who was not identified on Thursday, was taken to a hospital. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the police shooting.
