Crazed ex-boyfriend used birthday cake knife to stab mum of his kids at party

A crazed ex who stabbed the mum of his kids at a birthday party with the knife used to cut the cake has been jailed.

Tilal Hussein, 42, grabbed the six-inch blade and stabbed Selena McCalla in the stomach when he went to drop off their children and she invited him to a neighbour's birthday party.

An argument broke out where Hussein pushed Ms McCalla before fetching the silver knife, used to cut pizzas and birthday cake at the garden party in Rotherhithe, south London.

The aggressive brute was then seen swinging the knife about and was arrested by police on July 12.

Ms McCalla received stitches for her bloody wound and was left depressed and unable to sleep after the attack.

In evidence read to the court, she told how Hussein got "into her face" and pushed her as she cried out.

The pair previously had a 17-year relationship which was described as "tempestuous" and have two children aged ten and 15.

Hussein hung his head in the dock at Inner London Crown Court.

He was jailed for two years for maliciously wounding Ms McCalla and having a bladed article.

Dan Murray, defending, said: "He got up and left and came back with a silver knife used to cut the birthday cake and the pizzas. It was already present at the scene.

"He is very much ashamed of his actions because he has a ten-year-old and a 15-year-old who are of an age where they will know exactly what happened."

Murray went on: "He left the confrontation and got the knife from the party near the birthday cake. There was food and alcohol in front of the communal garden area."

The court heard Hussein has a history of domestic violence and that he had been drinking alcohol on the day of the knife attack in July.

In 2013, he was found guilty of attacking Ms McCalla and convicted of assault and battery but he was not sentenced for the crimes.

Commenting on the recent attack, Mr Murray said: "It was reckless. Mercifully the wound itself was only one by two centimetres.

"He recognises that drink is not one thing that agrees with him. He tells me alcohol has an effect on him and quite a disastrous one."

Police were called to the party on July 12 when Hussein was arrested and later interviewed by police.

He has insisted he did not intend to hurt Ms McCalla but failed to comment when interviewed by officers.

Upon sentencing, Judge David Spens QC said: "You went over to Ms McCalla and you stabbed her in her left side once.

"She suffered a single wound said to be one by two centimetres in her left upper abdomen and that had to be stitched up.

"Apparently after stabbing her, you were swinging the knife about.

"At the time of this event, you were not in a relationship. You were returning the children to where she lived however you were invited to a birthday party" An argument broke out between you and Ms McCalla. You went as if to hit her."

Hussein was convicted of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Ms McCalla and having a bladed article on July 12 this year.

He was jailed for two years and had his restraining order against Ms McCalla extended to 200 metres.
