Death Row convict killed ‘by fellow inmate with homemade weapon’ at prison

A child killer on Death Row has been stabbed to death with a home-made blade by a fellow inmate inside a California prison.

Jonathan Fajardo, who was convicted of the racially-motivated killing of a 14-year-old girl died from his injuries after being attacked in the recreation yard at the San Quentin State Prison.

Luis Rodriguez, who is on Death Row for two counts of first-degree murder, is suspected of killing Fajardo, 30.

It happened shortly before 10am yesterday, and prison officials have confirmed he died at 10.34am.

He was stabbed in the chest and neck.

Fajardo shot teenager Cheryl Green dead in an attack in Los Angeles in 2006.

The Los Angeles Times reported during his trial that he was thought to be a member of a Latino gang which targeted black people simply because of their race.

He opened fire on a group of black people in the Habor Gateway neighbourhood.

There are currently 742 criminals on Death Row in California, although the state has not executed a prisoner since 2006.

The killing is being investigated by the San Quentin’s Investigative Unit, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Rodriguez has not been charged, and prison authorities have yet to comment on a motive behind Fajardo’s murder.
