Why today is a big day for e-scooters in NYC

An e-bike rider who was killed in Brooklyn on Christmas morning after hitting a parked truck was intoxicated, police said Wednesday.

Alejandro Santos, 33, was operating the electric bicycle on Third Avenue near 24th Street about two miles from his home shortly after midnight when he smashed into a parked 2019 Ford flat-bed truck, police said.

Santos fell and struck the pavement causing leg and internal injuries, according to police. He was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital but couldn’t be saved.

An autopsy found that Santos had a blood alcohol level of .24, cops said. The legal limit for driving is .08.

The NYPD’s Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad investigated the crash.
