It was a defeat that left an expectant nation slumped on their sofas as millions of spectators were left disappointed.
But some England fans suggested last night’s 1-0 defeat to Belgium at the World Cup was a cunning plan by manager Gareth Southgate.
For the result saw the Three Lions finish second in the group, meaning an arguably easier route to the final that avoids Brazil, France, Argentina and Portugal.
Instead, England will play Colombia next Tuesday, followed by Switzerland or Sweden in the quarter finals, then Spain, Russia, Croatia or Denmark in the semis.
And fans took to social media to joke that Southgate, who made eight changes to the team following Sunday’s 6-1 thrashing of Panama, had actually wanted to lose.
But Southgate said afterwards that ‘the most important game is the knockout game’ and called the Colombia match England’s ‘biggest game for a decade’.
