Prince Charles will give away Meghan Markle at her wedding to Prince Harry tomorrow – but this isn’t the first time he’s walked a bride-to-be down the aisle.
The heir to the throne stepped up to the plate two years ago to give away a best friend’s daughter when her own dad was reportedly too ill.
The society wedding was between Alexandra Knatchbull, 35, the great-granddaughter of Lord Mountbatten, and Thomas Hooper.
The Queen and Prince Philip were also in attendance.
There was speculation at the time Charles had given Alexandra away because of her own father Lord Bradbourne’s ill health.
Alexandra wore classic white gown with an elaborate laced veil as she was walked down the aisle by Charles in a grey morning suit.
Charles was best man at Lord Bradbourne’s own wedding, 70, and he went on to become Prince William’s godfather.
The wedding at Romsey Abbey in Hampshire in June 2016 was attended by aristocrats from across Europe.
Queen Sophia of Spain, the former King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece and Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan were present.
Meghan, 36, was left with a gaping hole in her Windsor Castle wedding plans after her own dad Thomas, 73, pulled out with just days’ notice.
It followed heart surgery and a row over posed paparazzi photographs.
A statement from Kensington Palace read: "Ms Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St George’s Chapel on her wedding day.
"The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms Markle to the royal family in this way."
Yesterday morning, the palace released a statement from the former actress revealing her dad would would not be attending.
The statement read: "Sadly my father will not be attending our wedding.
"I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.
"I would like to than everyone who has offered generous messages of support.
"Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday."
Meghan’s mum Doria Ragland was tipped to step in and accompany her daughter down the aisle instead before it was announced Charles would undertake the duty.
