Gunman kills woman in Aldi before shooting himself dead in front of horrified shoppers in Germany

A gunman has shot dead a woman at an Aldi supermarket in central Germany before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting took place at 1pm local time in Schwalmstadt-Treysa, a town of around 8,500 people northeast of Frankfurt.

The shooter, 58, followed the woman, 53, in the shop before the killing, witnesses told local newspaper HNA.

 Half-full shopping trolleys and baskets were abandoned in the shop as panicked customers fled to safety

The shooting took place at 1pm local time in Schwalmstadt-Treysa, a town of around 8,500 people northeast of Frankfurt

She called out for help but at that moment he shot her dead before killing himself moments later.

Shoppers were horrified but some initially thought it was only the sound of glass breaking before they realised the extent of the horror.

Half-full shopping trolleys and baskets were abandoned in the shop as panicked customers fled to safety.

A huge police and ambulance presence arrived at the store, while shoppers and staff were looked after in the nextdoor cafe.

Police said there is no further danger but investigators are still surveying the scene and a cordon is in place.

They are still unsure of a motive and the identity of the killer has not been released.

A police spokesman: ‘The background to the crime is currently unknown. The police are on site with strong forces. There is no danger to the population.’
