Hero dog wearing life jacket saves boy who was ‘seconds from drowning’ in river

A brave dog has saved a young child’s life who was “just seconds” away from drowning after getting into difficulties in the deepest part of a river.

Staffy cross Max swam out after the the distressed child started having difficulties in the river mouth of Port Noarlung, South Australia.

Wearing his life jacket – complete with a handle the boy could cling onto – the pooch managed to drag the youngster back to the safety of dry land.

His owner Rob Osborn was the first to spot the boy in distress from the sand of the river bank but before he could launch his rescue attempt, Max had already set off.

Rob told the child to call Max’s name so it swam to him then to grab the handle on the life jacket and swim back to shore.

Adorable footage shared by 7 News recreates the incredible scenes, with the pup pulling a boy through the water with his life jacket on.

Witness Nevaeh Osborn said the situation was so serious that the boy was “bound to drown any second” had the pair not stepped in.

“He’s definitely a hero,” Rob said. “He doesn’t know it, he was just doing what he was told.”

Once the young boy was rescued, Max got some much-deserved cuddles while the mum thanked Rob.

But the hero dog and his family had to shoot off soon after and so couldn’t exchange details.

“I’d love to catch up with him and see how he’s doing, just to see if he’s alright,” Rob added.

It is not the first time dogs have risked their lives to save their human counterparts.

Last month, incredible footage emerged of a hero Jack Russell giving her life to rescue a 10-year-old girl from being attacked by a wolf.

And in November, another brave pooch saved four people trapped inside a hospital after a fire broke out.

Matilda was left with terrible burns but managed to survive.
